Stockholm - The Venice of the North

Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden (and arguably, Scandinavia) is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Built on a total of 14 islands, Stockholm is often referred to as the Venice of the North and offers stunning waterfront views from almost every angle.  The city is approximately one third water, one third greenbelt and one third city, which in short, means you can thoroughly enjoy the best of all worlds while visiting the area.

So much to explore

Despite the fact that Stockholm is the capital it has an amazingly small town feel to it with each of its islands offering a unique atmosphere, landscape and architecture.  The ‘Gamla Stan’, or old town, is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval cities, filled with an array of stunning archaic buildings and traditional cobbled streets.  Södermalm, a southern island of Stockholm is famous for it’s ‘bohemian’ atmospheres, vibrant cafes and an amazing selection of fantastic quality second hand boutiques.  Take a stroll down the breathtaking ‘Strandvägen’ avenue to admire the impressive waterside buildings and the comings and goings of the archipelago steam boats.  If shopping is your therapy of choice indulge yourself by perusing the huge Ähléns and NK department stores, Drottninggatan high street or the elegant Stureplan square, home of the designer stores in the city.  Finally, for many of the Swedish locals, life would not be complete without a boat, and in almost every part of the city you will find charming harbours and colourful collections of vessels waiting to be taken out on a sunny afternoon to cruise the islands of the Archipelago.

Countryside on your doorstep

Arguably one of the most unique attractions of Stockholm cherished by locals and visitors alike, is the proximity of the vibrant city streets to the wonderful fresh nature and greenery of the great outdoors.  In terms of accessibility opportunities, this is a dream come true.  It is refreshingly easy to get from the city centre to leafy green parks or waterside coves even for those in the group with accessibility needs.  Take the ferry from the city centre to the beautiful National City Park of Djurgården or meander alongside the water's edge of South Södermalm Island which boasts a beautiful park, enchanting harbour docks, authentic Swedish cafes and stunning views over the water.

If complete peace and quiet is what you desire, there are over 24’000 Islands within the amazing archipelago in which to explore and escape.  Take a boat trip for the day experiencing the fantastic scenery as you sail through the clear waters or spend a night or two in a relaxing country hotel or guest house to make the most of the beautiful surroundings.

Easy on the wallet - Enjoy the benefits of The Stockholm card

In order to open the possibilities of the city without seriously assaulting your wallet, the city came up with the fabulous idea of creating the Stockholm Card.  In short, the card covers durations of 24, 48 or 72 hours and includes free public transport (including the underground), entrance to over 75 attractions and museums and a selection of discounted boat trips around the city.
