A visit to Sweden is a fabulous way in which to really get into the Christmas spirit. By December in Stockholm fresh sprinkles of snow have usually made an appearance around and the city is aglow with festive decorations adorning the streets, cafes and bars. The shops are brimming with goodies to complete your Christmas lists and there are always unique winter experiences to enjoy such as the freshly carved sculptures in the ice gallery and the famous Absolute ice bar. And if you just can’t get enough ice, visit the man made ice skating rink in the centre of town where you can practice your turns and jumps or alternatively, collect a few bruises to take back home.
There are many opportunities to stop off in one of the traditional cosy bars found all over Stockholm in order to enjoy a delicious hot chocolate, a warming brandy or the festive beverage of choice, glögg. This is a hot wine drink flavored with cloves, cinnamon and sugar and varies in strength depending on who is responsible for making it. But it certainly does the trick and keeps the cold well at bay!
The Swedish Christmas dinner is a spectacular not to be missed. For Christmas the Swedes create a festive version of the famous smorgasbord, called the Julbord (or ‘Christmas table’). It is a huge affair and contains traditional foods such as Swedish meatballs, a variety of specially prepared herring, delicious fresh salmon and the famous Christmas ham. The Swedes love their Julbord and there are many different opportunities in which to sample its delights!
